Boasting over 30 different grape varieties in the Italian range from Picolit to Zibbibo, from Teroldego to Refrosco - there are so many interesting Italian wines to explore. As well as wines from Tuscany and Piedmonte there is a wealth of wine regions each with their own personality.
The hot South of the country is producing some of the most exciting wines such as Laithwaites top seller - Papavero Rosso. This is a rule breaking red from 4 regions and 4 different grape varieties. Other winning wines include the Farnese Pecorino (yes a grape variety as well as a cheese!) from the Abruzzo region, which won the International wine challenge trophy in 2007. Visionario Bianco from Friuli in the North East is made from a unique blend of 6 grape varieties including Tocai and Malvasia. This has proved popular with the wine critics and is now a multi-award winner.
The Laithwaites Italian buyer, Thomas Woolrych comments "There has never been a better time to buy Italian wines, quality is at an all time high and the number of diverse grapes and regions offers customers more than any other wine country"
2006 was a fantastic year in Italy and 2007 is rumoured to be even better by many wine plaudits. Volumes are the lowest they have been in 60 years which means high quality but pressure on stocks.
